Abu Dhabi, March 23, 2026: Burjeel Medical City has successfully performed the UAE's first uniportal robotic lobectomy, a minimally invasive approach that combines robotic technology with clinical expertise, strengthening Abu Dhabi's position as a leading destination for healthcare innovation focusing on prediction, prevention, and early intervention. The milestone procedure, performed on Jean Erika, a 37-year-old patient with stage one lung cancer, redefines care for patients with early-stage cancer by opening new possibilities and improving outcomes like never before.

Recurring Dry Cough Reveals Cancer

The story of Jean Erika highlights the importance of medical evaluation when symptoms persist. She never imagined that her persistent dry cough, a symptom usually linked to common respiratory conditions, was a possible early sign of underlying cancer. "I had a recurring cough for about three weeks. Despite completing a course of antibiotics, the cough didn't subside," recalls Jean, who has been living in Abu Dhabi for the past eight years. She works as a dental nurse in a private dental center.

A CT scan with dye and a biopsy confirmed carcinoma. Her condition was discussed in a Multidisciplinary Tumor board meeting where it was decided that the best way forward was surgery. Following this, she consulted Dr. Taj Mohammed Fiyaz Chowdhry, Consultant Thoracic Surgeon, who suggested a uniportal robotic 3 cm lobectomy.

It is a procedure where a part of the lung is removed through a single 3 cm incision, with all three or four robotic arms going through the same incision.

Jean felt anxious about surgery, especially with a robot performing it. “But the doctor explained that robotic surgery would mean faster recovery and smaller wounds, which helped me feel reassured,” says Jean, who prepared herself for the surgery with the support of the medical team as well as her friends. “The entire team, including the anesthesiologist, met with me before the surgery and explained everything clearly. They made me feel comfortable and confident.”

Minimally Invasive Surgery, Faster Recovery

The surgery led by Dr. Taj lasted about four hours. He was accompanied by Dr. Nermeen Said Hassanin, Consultant Anesthesia, and Mr. Renukesh, Robotic Surgery Nurse Specialist. The team used the da Vinci Xi system, which provides precision, control, and minimally invasive access. While Dr. Chowdhry operated on the console, an experienced assistant supported the patient's side. The anesthesia team ensured the lung was isolated and the patient remained stable.

The surgery went smoothly without complications. "Normally, patients are discharged five to seven days after a traditional lobectomy. However, she was fit for discharge just two days after surgery due to minimal dissection and reduced surgical stress," says the doctor.

I realized how advanced UAE healthcare has become. As a nurse, I really appreciate how robotic surgery causes minimal scarring and less pain, and allows faster recovery, letting patients return to their normal lives sooner. At BMC, everything was efficient, and the facilities were excellent. The staff were very supportive and accommodating. They took care of all my needs and made sure I felt comfortable throughout.

Breakthrough in Early-Stage Cancer Care

According to Dr. Chowdhry, this approach is best suited for early stages of cancer. "For Jean, this method was chosen because she had early-stage cancer with no significant lymph node involvement and had not undergone chemotherapy or immunotherapy.

It is generally preferred not to perform this surgery on patients who have previously received chemotherapy or with bulky lymph node disease, as these factors may make it technically difficult to perform through uniportal.

Abu Dhabi, April 11, 2026: For weeks, they remained on the frontlines, delivering care when it mattered most. On Saturday evening, they gathered once again. However, this time, it was not in hospitals, but on a sports ground, under one banner, united for the UAE. 

In a unique tribute reflecting the nation’s spirit of solidarity, frontline healthcare workers from Burjeel Holdings, a leading super-specialty healthcare provider in the MENA region, set a Guinness World Record for the ‘Most Nationalities Carrying a Banner’, bringing together 64 nationalities in a single coordinated formation at Abu Dhabi’s Hudayriyat Island. The day witnessed rain. Despite it, people poured in by the evening and stood firm in support of the nation.  

Held during the closing ceremony of the Burjeel Games, the Group’s annual sports event in collaboration with Abu Dhabi Sports Council (ADSC), the initiative themed “Our Nation. Our Heartbeat.” transformed a sporting finale into a moment of national reflection. It was inspired by the UAE leadership’s call to raise the national flag and reinforce unity across the country. Organized within 48 hours, it became the first record-breaking event to be staged in the region after the nation reaffirmed its strength following the change in circumstances.  

A Guinness Record of Unity, Diversity, and Resilience

At the venue, the participants carried a single banner measuring 85 meters and weighing over 200 kilograms. A total number of 153 people, including the 64 unique nationalities, walked a distance of 100 meters while holding it overhead, surpassing the previous record of 58 nationalities set in Dubai in 2019. 

Dr. Shamsheer Vayalil, Chairman and CEO of Burjeel Holdings, described the initiative as a reflection of both the UAE’s resilience and the commitment of its healthcare workforce. “We are proud to be part of a nation that brings together so many cultures under one vision. This initiative represents the resilience of the UAE and the strength of its people. In the past weeks, we have stood alongside the nation, serving communities with commitment and care. This moment reflects that same spirit, a collective expression of unity from people who call this country home,” he said. 

The attempt adhered to strict Guinness World Records guidelines, with each participant representing a unique nationality and completing the required distance in a synchronized formation. Mr. Raafat Tawfik, the official Guinness World Records adjudicator present on-site, reviewed the attempt and confirmed its success. “We are officially congratulating you on the 64 nationalities,” the adjudicator announced.  

His Excellency Aref Hamad Al Awani, Secretary-General of the Abu Dhabi Sports Council, affirmed that this achievement reflects the growing stature of Abu Dhabi as a global hub for sports and community events that blend athletics with human and national values.

A Moment Deferred, Then Reimagined 

The Burjeel Games, one of the UAE’s largest healthcare sports and community events with over 2,500 participants, was originally set to conclude on February 28. However, in light of regional circumstances at the time, the final was postponed. 

As the situation evolved and the nation emerged stronger, the Burjeel community reconvened to complete the Games in a meaningful way. The finale became a platform for a larger expression, a record-setting tribute to the country that unites them. 

From Frontlines to a Moment of Unity 

For many of the participants, the moment carried deeper meaning. “Our usual days include focusing on care and being present for every patient who needs us,” said Dr. Michael George Uglow from Burjeel Medical City, a native of United Kingdom. “Today, we came together differently, as proud members of the UAE, standing under one banner.” 

Dirkie Theunissen, Group Chief Nursing Officer, who hails from South Africa, reflected on the diversity. “We work side by side with colleagues from across the world every day. Today, that diversity came alive in a powerful way. It reminded us why the UAE feels like home.”

Abu Dhabi, January 20, 2026: What was planned as a leadership address became an emotional moment for thousands of healthcare workers as Burjeel Holdings Chairman and CEO Dr. Shamsheer Vayalil announced AED 15 million financial recognition fund during a Group-wide town hall attended by more than 8,500 employees at Etihad Arena.

The gathering marked a first-of-its-kind moment in the UAE, with one of the country’s largest CEO-led employee town halls bringing together frontline staff, clinicians, nurses, allied health professionals, and support teams under one roof. Midway through the address, employees’ phones began buzzing with SMS notifications confirming their inclusion in the newly launched BurjeelProud recognition initiative, prompting sustained applause across the arena.

“This is not a reward for a department. This is not tied to conditions. This is not because you asked. This is because you are the people on the ground,” Dr. Shamsheer told employees.

AED 15 Million Surprise for Frontliners

Close to 10,000 frontline employees will benefit from the first phase of the initiative, covering nearly 85 percent of Burjeel Holdings’ nursing, allied health, patient care, operations, and support workforce. The financial recognition is expected to be equivalent to approximately half a month to one month of basic salary, depending on role and category.

“This country gave us the opportunity to grow. And when a country gives you that opportunity, you carry a responsibility to give back with action,” he said.

He described frontliners as central to Burjeel’s identity and future direction. “I will not be able to stand here if you are not there on the ground,” he told employees.

The announcement came as a surprise to many in attendance, with several frontline staff seen emotional as the timing and message became clear. “It was a real surprise. It felt like a moment for all of us on the frontline,” said one nurse after the event.

The recognition initiative forms part of Burjeel Holdings’ next phase of growth, Burjeel 2.0, with a focus on execution, accountability, and people-led growth.

Burjeel Medical City to Evolve into Next-gen Ecosystem

The address also outlined Burjeel’s 2030 vision for Burjeel Medical City (BMC), which will evolve into a next-generation medical city ecosystem in Mohammed Bin Zayed City. The expansion aims to move beyond a traditional hospital model by integrating complex clinical care with research, medical education, rehabilitation, and patient-centered living environments.

“I still remember standing with a small model of Burjeel Medical City and sharing that vision with His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan during his visit years ago. It was only a

dream then. Today, it stands as one of the most important healthcare institutions in the region,” Dr. Shamsheer said.

The JCI Gold Certification, considered a global benchmark in healthcare excellence, is granted only to institutions that demonstrate the highest international standards in clinical care delivery. In the Establishments category, LLH Hospital, Abu Dhabi, received recognition in the Healthcare Company sub-category. For LLH Hospital, this marks a hat-trick win at the Labour Market Awards. In the inaugural edition, it was honored for its outstanding achievement in Workforce Well-being and the Quality of Life category, followed by the Establishments — Healthcare and Social Work category in the second edition.

Abu Dhabi, November 8, 2025: Reinforcing the UAE’s ambition to emerge as a global leader in advanced pediatric care and its growing reputation as a hub of medical excellence and innovation, Abu Dhabi hosted the Fourth Emirates Pediatric Bone Marrow Transplantation and Gene Therapy Congress, which opened today at the Grand Hyatt Abu Dhabi Hotel & Residences. The two-day congress brings together global leaders in pediatric hematology, oncology, and cellular therapy, underscoring the nation’s vision to position itself at the forefront of complex and life-saving medical treatments. 

This year’s congress, themed “An International Get-Together of Pediatric BMT Physicians to Celebrate the Success of Saving Children Globally,” reflects the spirit of collaboration and shared progress that defines the global pediatric bone marrow transplant community. The theme highlights the dedication of physicians, researchers, and healthcare institutions working together to advance curative treatments for children with rare and life-threatening blood disorders. 

A Two-Day Comprehensive Scientific Program

Dubai: In an effort to support preventive cancer care, Burjeel Hospitals, has announced the launch of Trucheck™ intelli, an advanced, non-invasive testing method for the early detection of cancer. A breakthrough in integrative diagnostic technology and personalized care, Trucheck requires just a simple blood test and is capable of identifying more than 70 solid tumors.  

A Simple Method Offering Precise, Personalized Care

This year, the Group received seven awards in ‘Large Facility’ and ‘Individual’ categories for its ongoing efforts to attract, develop, and retain UAE Nationals across its facilities.  

The Nafis Award, an initiative launched as part of the ‘Projects of the 50’ agenda, aims to enhance the competitiveness of Emirati human resources and empower them to occupy jobs in the private sector. The award was launched under the patronage and guidance of His Highness Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Vice President, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of the Presidential Court, Chairman of the Emirati Talent Competitiveness Council. The winners were announced during the third cycle of the award ceremony held in Abu Dhabi.

Over the past two years, Burjeel Holdings saw a 300% increase in the number of UAE Nationals across its units, with nearly 30% now serving in senior roles. Its initiatives continue to inspire more young Emiratis to pursue meaningful careers in healthcare.  

Breast cancer treatment is often a journey filled with complex decisions. A 51-year-old woman, previously treated for breast cancer, presented with a new challenge—an ulcerative lesion in the nipple-areola complex (NAC). Initially misdiagnosed as triple-negative breast cancer, further evaluation at Burjeel Breast Center revealed Paget’s disease with ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS). 

Accurate Diagnosis 

Expert review by Burjeel’s pathology team prevented unnecessary chemotherapy. This highlights the importance of second opinions and precise pathology in cancer care. 

Surgical Management 

The patient required excision of the entire NAC and surrounding ulcerated skin (8 × 6 cm). Wishing to preserve her implant-based reconstruction, she declined invasive options such as latissimus dorsi flap. The surgical team recommended a Medial Intercostal Artery Perforator (MICAP) flap with skin paddle, a muscle-sparing technique ideal for such complex cases. 

The Procedure 

Surgeons successfully performed a wide local excision followed by immediate partial breast reconstruction. The MICAP flap allowed skin resurfacing while preserving the implant. The patient recovered smoothly, with excellent cosmetic and functional results. 

Outcome and Follow-up 

Final histology confirmed Paget’s disease with DCIS—completely excised with clear margins and no invasive carcinoma. Multidisciplinary review concluded the surgery was curative, eliminating the need for further treatment.
